voting in a swing state, iowa. guess who's there, john king. iowa city, iowa. john, are you seeing many early voters where you are? >> reporter: we have seen quite a few of them, brooke. we had a camera here in iowa city and des moines earlier today. i wouldn't say it's gangbusters but modest lines, people saying pretty good loins and if you look at the stickers, the t-shirts, a lot of them, most of them are obama voters so you would say score the first day of early voting in iowa for the president and a cautionary note, though. there's a strategic difference of the republicans and the democrats. democrats early investing in early voting and i talked to steve grubs saying the democrats won the early voting in 2010 and did quite well in the statewide races and legislative races and there's a difference of how important early voting is and nearly four in ten votes in 2010 cast early. 35 states and the district of columbia allow some form of in person early voting. this is the most critical part. young voters, a state where the young vote for obama did make a difference in 2008. their enth

voting kicked off today. we're here in iowa city. we saw a pretty healthy line. mostly students, mostly obama supporters here. mostly obama supporters on day one. now, republicans say that's overblown. if you've made up your mind to vote even before the debates, you are going to be for one candidate or the other no matter what and you are going to vote. so if you're voting early, voting late, it doesn't matter. but one of the places obama thinks it helps is they had a big swell in the youth vote last time. they had the support in the polls, but, wolf, frankly they think turnout could be down this time. sometimes college students get a bit distracted. one of the things, the president of the university of iowa democrats, her job is to tell all of her friends, all of the fellow students vote now. >> things come up. you can have an exam. you can wait until election day and not know where your precinct is. a lot of student haves to go to elementary schools, they don't have cars, they don't know where it is, any extra obstacle can keep students home on election day. early voting gives us 40 m

. if this started in a residential area you might have phoenix police involved. but once's outside the city limit they would turn this over to state troopers. it's close to the state lines, then you have got this transfer from arizona to potentially california if this thing keeps going. you are kind of in that gray area of exactly who's trailing him and how aggressively they are trailing him. megyn: what were you saying about reports of shots fired? >> the reports are that he fired shots sat lives. now we are getting reports that about 20 miles back is when those shots were fired. keep in mind they believe this is a carjacking suspect. in the car. carjacking intimates that he was in some capacity stealing this car from somebody else. we don't know if that somebody else is still inside the car. we are still trying to get a beat on that and trying to get ahold of police officers to give us more information or if that person was kicked out of the car the car was stolen and off he went. but we know he's armed and that changes the whole complexity about the way the police will aggressively pursue this
